Set up an Incorporated Company

You can do so by visiting any Registry Agent in Alberta. You do not necessarily need to have a lawyer to do this. You can expect to pay anywhere from $200 - $275 for this service as it is not a regulated fee. You may have a simple numbered company (example: 456789 Alberta LTD) or a named company (example: Bob’s Engineering Consulting Ltd). If you desire a named company, a search must be conducted to ensure your chosen name is available. There is a small additional fee for a named company search.

You will need to fill in forms and then can generally expect the processing to be complete within 1-3 business days depending on how busy the registry is and if a name search is needed.

If you are in Alberta, you can establish your Incorporated Company by visiting any Registry office. Here is a listing of the Alberta Registries Agents/locations: http://www.servicealberta.gov.ab.ca/617.cfmIf you are in currently in another province, you may wish to establish your company in Alberta upon arrival or do so on the Service Alberta website: http://www.servicealberta.gov.ab.ca/712.cfm(Please note an Alberta address is required)

Set up a business bank account

A business account is required for payroll deposits. Incorporated Company contractors cannot be paid into personal accounts. It is a good idea to call ahead and make an appointment with your bank. You will need your Incorporated Company documents with you when you do this.

Establish a GST #

Once your  Company is established, you will also need to have a GST # assigned. You can apply online for this at the Revenue Canada website:

http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/tx/bsnss/tpcs/gst-tps/rgstrng/menu-eng.html

Or in person at the Harry Hays building in downtown Calgary: 220 4th Avenue South-East

If you need further assistance, please call: 1-800-959-5525

If you apply online, you will receive your GST# right away although; you will be cautioned not to use it (i.e. charge GST) until you receive hard copy verification in the mail which can take 1 – 2 weeks. Register your GST# to match your start date.

Follow Up

The following is required to set you up on payroll:

A copy of the Certificate of Incorporation.  (page with the seal)

Banking details for your company  ( Void cheque )

The Registered GST # for your company

It is important that you establish your Incorporated Company as soon as possible. Completing the above steps in a timely fashion will ensure your start date and/or your payroll deposits remain on schedule.
