Adecco is currently hiring for a permanent, part-time Marine Logistics Coordinator to work at a leading Canadian organization that services the marine community in Atlantic Canada. In this role, you will be responsible for all aspects of the pilotage operations as it relates to dispatching during your duty shift.

  • Pay Rate: $27.48/Hour

  • Location: Halifax, NS

  • Shifts: 7am-7pm & 7pm-7am; 3-5 shifts/month + Reliefs Shifts

  • Job type: Part-time | Casual 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Determining pilotage assignment requirements based on an analysis of information and requests for service received and communicates this information to various stakeholders to ensure safe and efficient marine navigation

  • Inputting/updating pertinent information on a given ship, such as name, nationality, tonnage and draft on the computer system (DABS)

  • Verifying with recognized authority, that information received regarding vessel details are accurate

  • Communicating with agents and captains to avoid or resolve problems

  • Providing information to shipping agents, marine companies and VTS

  • Re-transmitting requests for pilotage services and other information received to pilots, pilot boat crews, VTS, harbor master or any other party as required

  • Checking the accuracy of any information which may appear incorrect with all concerned

  • Identifying any possible infractions to regulations and report the information to the Duty Officer

  • Assigning pilots and apprentice pilots, in compliance with regulations and procedures, for the provision of safe navigation to vessels.

  • Staying abreast of pilotage laws and regulations and pilot assignment regulations and procedures

  • Maintaining various rotation schedules for pilots and pilot boat crew

  • Calling pilots with appropriate class licenses and providing them with the usual and special pertinent information regarding the ship

  • Using the computer system and/or manual backup system, co-ordinate water and land transportation services for pilots and apprentice pilots in accordance with procedures

  • Applying regulations governing apprentice-pilots

  • Planning upcoming assignments, ensuring pilot availability and notifying the Duty Officer of any possible shortages

  • Using communication equipment, programs and broadcast pilot rotation in each station, ship traffic in each area, as well as various other notices as required

  • Keeping the information system up-to-date and prepare various statistical reports in order to provide a user-friendly data bank that will aid decision-making

  • Participating in the training of new and temporary staff

  • Using and maintaining office equipment and various other equipment, including communication tools and computer systems

  • Being prepared to provide any necessary assistance during peak periods or rescue operations

  • Keeping the billing duties up-to-date and reporting any problems to management staff

  • Performing other Dispatcher duties as required

Requirements and Qualifications: 

  • Minimum of high school diploma /GED is required

  • Radio Operator Certificate

  • Knowledge of or previous experience in the marine and/or maritime shipping industry is a must

  • Previous experience as a Logistics Coordinator in the transportation sector or relevant industry is considered an asset

  • A relevant combination of associated education and experience will be considered

  • Working knowledge of communications equipment and Microsoft suite of products, as well as DABS and other related database applications, is needed

  • Excellent oral communication skills in English, as well as outstanding interpersonal skills are a must

  • Bilingualism in English and French is an asset

  • General knowledge of the geography of the Atlantic Provinces is a must

  • Excellent organizational skills, with a strong ability to analyze, prioritize and plan in a fast-paced computerized environment

  • Able to make informed decisions and assign priorities objectively under potentially stressful conditions

  • Possesses sound judgment, initiative, and organizational skills, and is self-motivate and multi-task oriented

  • Must be willing to work different shifts, day and night, and on weekends to support 24/7 operation

  • Must be legally eligible to work and reside in Canada
