Questions to Ask your Interviewer to Leave a Lasting Impression

Questions to Ask your Interviewer to Leave a Lasting Impression

Why should you ask questions in the interview?

Not only do questions grab the hiring manager’s attention, they are a surefire way to extend the interview. Plus, your interviewer’s answers can hint at what they think of you, giving you the chance to correct any misperceptions and reservations along the way. You can also use interview questions to seek insights into the company beyond what may be available online.

What should you ask?

Now that you understand the importance of asking questions, it’s time to think about which questions will work to enhance your interview. You want questions that will keep the conversation moving forward and help you gain information about the job, ultimately allowing you to decide if it’s the right position for you. Take a look at a few of our favourites:

  • What major improvements and setbacks has your company undergone?
  • Who are your major competitors? How do they stack up against you in terms of strengths and weaknesses?
  • How does this position assist the company in achieving overall goals?
  • What can I expect in a typical day?
  • What qualities or characteristics do your top colleagues exhibit?
  • What are your favourite and least favourite parts about working here?
  • How do you see me fitting in with your company?
  • How do I compare with other qualified candidates?
  • When can I return and meet some of the people on the team?

Before concluding the interview with a handshake, make sure the hiring team has everything they need to make a positive hiring decision, including why you’ll be such a great addition! Don’t forget to inquire about the next steps in the hiring process so that you understand the hiring manager’s timelines and you’re not anxiously waiting by the phone.
